My name is Heather Bonham, and I am honored to have become a member of Golden Key. Currently, I am a student (Junior year status) of Ashford University, where I am pursuing my bachelor’s degree, online, in Social Science with Education Concentration in order to become a high school History and Language Arts teacher, or more specifically, I am interested in teaching U.S. History, U.S. Government, English Literature, Language Arts, and possibly Drama. Thus far, I have earned a 4.0 major GPA and a 3.99 cumulative undergraduate GPA; I am excited to continue this kind of progress throughout my academic quest! I traveled an interesting to road to reach this place in my life, college, and I would be happy to share my story.
After becoming a mother at a young age, I decided to wait to attend college until my son was grown. To earn a living and at the same time be there for my child, I created, owned, and operated my own freelance photography business for over 15 years, and when my son became a young adult, I retired my photography business so that I could finally pursue my collegiate goals full time. I do not regret my waiting to obtain higher education, because I knew that what I was doing in running a successful small business was done out of love for my son; and to my pleasant surprise, my decision to attend college and after my dream served to inspire both my son and my stepson as young adults. Subsequently, it occurred to me that my timing actually provided good influence to my children at an appropriate time in their lives.
Currently, I have been thoroughly researching the next step to take, according to my own state, regarding preparation in becoming a future teacher in Ohio. I have been in contact with the Ohio Department of Education, my school district, and even former teachers from childhood in order to piece together what pre-teaching experiences would benefit my future career most. I guess you could say that I am sort of putting my ducks in a row, so to speak. I know I need to intern for a given amount of time, in addition to earning my bachelor’s degree, in order to take the licensing examination, and I know I have ten years from the time I am issued a license to earn my master’s degree (which I will continue to pursue as soon as I have received my bachelor’s). Additionally, I have considered, in the meantime, taking the ParaPro exam so that I might become a teacher’s aide on a part-time basis; thus, I would gain even more experience and familiarity within a classroom setting while continuing to work on my bachelor’s degree.
I look forward to getting to know other Golden Key members, and wish you all the very best in your respective journeys! Have a wonderful day, everyone!
