Five Golden Key Members Named Rhodes Scholars
The Rhodes Scholarships were established after the death of Cecil Rhodes, who dreamed of improving the world through the diffusion of leaders motivated to serve their contemporaries, trained in the contemplative life of the mind, and broadened by their acquaintance with one another and by their exposure to cultures different from their own. Each year, 32 U.S. citizens are among more than 80 Rhodes Scholars worldwide who take up degree courses at Oxford University.
Four Golden Key Members were named as Rhodes Scholars:
Myron Rolle (Florida State University)
Aisha Saad (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill)
Scott Hugo (University of California at Los Angeles)
Joshua Lospinoso (United States Military Academy, West Point)
Nhlantlha Dlamini (University of Witwatersrand)
The University of Arkansas: Spreading Literacy to Young and Old
During the 2008-2009 Academic year, the Golden Key chapter at the University of Arkansas collected and donated over 400 books to Arkansans. According to the Arkansas Literacy Council, Arkansas has over 1,993,031 residents eighteen or older. Of this number, 491,000, or almost twenty-five percent, did not have a high school diploma, and 170,420 had less than an eighth-grade education. The fall book drive collected nearly 200 brand new books that went to the Children’s Hospital in Little Rock for Christmas. In addition, Manor Nursing Home in Bentonville, Arkansas will be receiving over 215 mysteries and other novels donated by Golden Key members. In the fall of 2009, the chapter members plan to spend time at the Manor Nursing home reading with the residents.
