Literacy Service Activities

Golden Key Staff Supports Literacy in Atlanta, Georgia

In an effort to model our global literacy focus, the US University Relations team paired with Sylvan Hills Middle school in Atlanta this fall to create an essay competition for the students in grades 6, 7 and 8. Students were asked to submit writing samples which discussed literacy and its importance in Society.

On April 14th, the US University Relations team spent some time with the winners of this first literacy essay competition. Four students were recognized for their writing achievements. Each student was given a certificate of recognition and a Golden Key bag stuffed with school supplies. The overall winner, Aqueelah Jannah, walked away with a $100 (USD) Barnes and Noble gift card! Fellow students and teachers convened to support the winners. The three runners up were: Solomon Nelson, Tyeisha Williams and Charkira Patrick. Congratulations to all the winners!

Alumni Highlights

Since graduating with honors from Hofstra with a BS in Education (Music) in 2003, where she was inducted into Golden Key, Kimberly Toscano has gone on to become the Principal Timpanist of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra in Tucson, AZ. It is extremely rare for a woman to hold the post of Principal Timpanist in a professional orchestra. Only a small handful of women in the country currently hold this position.

Before holding this post, Ms. Toscano attended the prestigious, New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, MA where she received her Master of Music in Percussion Performance. She was then invited to Carnegie Mellon University to do a Performance Residency. In addition to her duties as Principal Timpanist, Ms. Toscano is active in the community of Tucson, volunteering as a percussion teacher to the under-served children in the community. She is also a percussion/timpani clinician/coach and mentor for young aspiring musicians throughout the area. Ms. Toscano's career goal is to become the first woman to hold the post of Principal Timpanist of a Top Ten Symphony Orchestra.

If you would like to be featured in an upcoming eNewsletter, please send details of your life's highlights, personal successes and business information to alumni@goldenkey.org. Be sure to include the university/college where you were inducted.
