| Congratulations to the 2009 winners: |
| Computer Art: Joshua Falconer - University of California-Santa Barbara ($1,000) |
Joshua comments, "This summer I will be engaged in a rich and diverse selection of creative processes that will further develop my commitment to solving new design problems through traditional bookmaking processes. As I fulfill the last requirements for the BA in Book Arts from the College of Creative Studies at UC Santa Barbara, I will complete a typeface design, two original book structure designs, and several letterpress printing projects for a senior gallery exhibit. Meanwhile I will design and edit four liturgical books in bilingual editions with author Paul F. Ford for the Liturgical Press in Collegeville, MN. As recipient of the 2009 Grabhorn Fellows Program, I will also observe the operations of the Arion Press and the M&H Typefoundry in San Francisco during the second week of August. Essentially, this award enables me to dedicate a significant portion of my time to productive work in these activities. It also means that I will be able to finance several components of my senior show that I didn't think would come into existence for want of means. For these reasons, I wish to express my deep gratitude for the far-reaching impact this assistance will have at a critical transition point in my development as an artist and designer." |

| Dance: Sarah Bek - University of Cincinatti ($1,000) |
Sarah comments, "I was incredibly excited and relieved to receive the news I was to be granted this scholarship! Now that I think back, I believe the other patrons in the library were most likely giving me odd looks based upon my reaction! Choosing the life of a dancer in the world of today is not an easy road, and the last few years spent working toward my degree have been equally as challenging. Through it all however, I have been encouraged by many unexpected events, not the least of which is the advent of this scholarship. I have found whenever I reach a fork in the path and am facing difficult times, there have always been chance encounters or a gift given which spurs me on towards my dreams, and once again makes them a reality. As I look onward towards graduate school, loan payments and the inevitable 24/7 workload, I find myself refreshed and eager, well prepared with help from Golden Key and many others, with thanks in my heart and a sparkle in my eye. Thank you Golden Key, and may others continue to benefit from your support and generosity." |

| Photography: Sasi Shanmugarajah - University of Toronto ($1,000) |
Sasi comments, "I am honored to have been chosen as the recipient of the 2009 Visual & Performing Arts Achievement Award in Photography. I am very grateful that the Golden Key Honours Society provides such scholarships as it greatly promotes the Arts world-wide, and gives much appreciated recognition to artists. My passion is people and documentary photography, which I have been teaching myself over the years through books and continuous practice. I believe that there are many stories of people facing everyday battles that need to be told, and so I plan to use the award funds to enroll in several courses to strengthen my documentary photography skills. I feel this will better enable me to bring to light important stories of communities around the world through pictures." |

| Vocal: Calvin Griffin - The Ohio State University ($1,000) |
Calvin comments, "I am a student at OSU double majoring In Vocal Performance and Choral Education. In my field, summer apprentice programs hold an essential place for training for the professional singer. These programs help singers to gain performance and rehearsal time on stage, and establish a professional network along with much more. This summer I will be performing in The Janiec Opera Company at the Brevard Music Institution. The Janiec Opera Company enrolls 36 college-aged and pre-professional singers who aspire to careers in the opera world. Brevard offers stage experience in addition to daily rehearsals, coaching, and classes. Topics in classes include acting, diction, and the audition process. Visiting opera professionals present master classes, and there is a daily movement class. The money from this scholarship will be used to help pay my tuition to Brevard. I would like to express to you my sincere gratitude for your aid in my musical endeavor." |

| Instrumental: Pervinca Rista - Johns Hopkins University ($1,000) |
Pervinca comments, "I am very grateful for the 2009 Performing Arts Achievement Award in instrumental music. This award will help me travel to Padova, Italy, where I plan to give an exam at the State Conservatory, part of a comprehensive series of theoretical, historical, and instrumental examinations that culminate in an Italian violin diploma. Such studies will deepen and solidify my knowledge not only of music, but of the cultures and history that have shaped it. I am deeply interested in literature and the humanities in addition to music; I completed a double degree at Johns Hopkins University (BA, Romance Languages and Literatures, BM, violin performance) before my Master of Music degree, and my goal is to continue on to a double doctorate, in music and in comparative literature. This combined passion for academic and musical studies makes the award from Golden Key especially meaningful. It is a great encouragement to receive recognition for instrumental performance from an honors society founded on rigorous academic standards, for it gives new confirmation to my long-held belief that the academics and the arts are not only compatible but complementary." |
