Study Abroad Scholarships

Congratulations to the Spring 2009 winners:

Devin Wakefield - San Diego State University ($1,000)
Devin comments, "I have desired to engage in research abroad since beginning my biochemistry studies at San Diego State University.  The Research Internships in Science and Engineering (RISE) program is the type of opportunity I have been anticipating; conducting research with a top university in Germany will be a rewarding and unique experience.  The 2009 Golden Key Study Abroad Scholarship will help see that this happens.  To not have to rely exclusively on family or part-time work to help pay for studying abroad, I am appreciative of the assistance provided by the Golden Key Study Abroad Scholarship.  This award will provide an important contribution toward covering the cost of living in Dortmund and/or aiding in additional travels throughout Germany.  This outstanding honor will be a helping hand as my participation in the RISE program enriches my college experience and sets me on the path to pursuing a global future."
Miheer Sane - University of Connecticut ($1,000)
Miheer comments, "I am very grateful for being chosen for this award. The scholarship will allow me to participate in UConn’s first neuroscience study abroad program in Salamanca, Spain. While there, I will be learning from an international panel of faculty who are leading experts in the neurobiology of hearing. I will also be immersing myself in the language and culture of Spain, an unparalleled form of learning. My study abroad experience will allow me to grow both scientifically and linguistically, helping me in my future endeavors in medicine, and Golden Key has facilitated this possibility."
Erica Vargas - Texas Tech University ($1,000)
Erica comments, "I have a genuine interest in learning and trying new things, which is why I applied for a study abroad program in tropical ecology in Costa Rica. I will now have the opportunity to learn about ecology hands-on while learning about a new culture at the same time. I have research interests in disease ecology, and I hope to have a research career in the future. Golden Key has always been an organization that has helped me realize my goals. I am honored to have received an award from Golden Key, and it will be used to pay for my study abroad program fees. Thank you!"
Mariah Thompson - University of Oregon ($1,000)
Mariah comments, "I am both thrilled and grateful to have been chosen to receive a Golden Key study abroad scholarship. I will be studying abroad in Argentina in the fall of 2009, and this scholarship will help make the opportunity to experience another culture much easier on myself and my family by helping to finance the cost of the trip. I am looking forward to having the chance to live abroad and fully participate in the daily lives and routines of an host family and to study with local community leaders and activists. I will be studying human rights and social movements in Buenos Aires and indigenous communities in south of the country and feel that this experience will be both rewarding and life changing. I fully appreciate the assistance that this scholarship will provide me, and offer my greatest thanks to Golden Key."
Sara Ware - University of New Mexico ($1,000)
Sara comments, "I am honored to have received this award! Thank you to those that created and offered this award to us hard working students!  My future career is very important to me and that is why I strive to be great at what I do.  I will graduate with a BS in Signed Language Interpreting, December 2009.  My sign interpreting program at University of New Mexico does a great job at focusing on Deaf Culture as well as the language.  It is true that the Deaf do have a culture and I must understand this to be able to do my job.  What am I going to do with this scholarship money?  There is a wonderful study abroad program that I have been accepted to go and study Italian Deaf Culture as well as Italian Deaf Sign Language.  It is offered through a school in Siena, Italy.  Its a perfect opportunity for me to study another part of Deaf Culture.  I will put this money to good use by paying for part of the tuition!  I am so excited to have been selected for this award!  Thank you so much!"
Manako Yabe - California State University-Northridge ($1,000)
Manako comments, "Greetings! I am an international deaf student from Japan who is attending California State University, Northridge (CSUN). I am so honored that I have been chosen as a winner of the 2009 Golden Key Study Abroad Scholarship. I would like to use the award to cover a part of my budget of Jamaica Crew Trip of 2009-2010, including the transportation fee and hotel fee (the current estimate of total trip cost is $1651.00). As a crew member of the Jamaica Crew Trip, I look forward to learning about Jamaican Deaf Culture, History and Jamaican Sign Language and visiting the Caribbean Christian Center for the Deaf in Knock Patrick, Jamaica. I would like to provide service and exchange information about Jamaican, American, and Japanese Deaf Cultures, and I would also like to share information about the three different Deaf Educational Systems to give the Jamaican Deaf students a chance to widen their international views. I am excited to have the opportunity to make a presentation about the life experiences of the Jamaican Deaf Community to the CSUN Community after the trip."
Chelsea Person - Virginia Commonwealth University ($1,000)
Chelsea comments, "This scholarship means so much to me! I am extremely excited to have been chosen for this award. I had already set sail on my Semester at Sea voyage when I heard this wonderful news.  Unexpected travel costs have caused me great stress so far, and this award will alleviate those costs. This will allow me to participate in required field practice for my classes aboard the MV Explorer. I am extremely thankful for this scholarship; words cannot express my gratitude at this moment. This scholarship will keep me motivated and focused now that money is no longer an issue. Thank you so much Golden Key!"
