Kirill comments, "I am overjoyed to have been awarded the GK Math Scholarship. In a world where so many go without receiving a formal education, having received a good one is a blessing, and I see this award more as a credit to my teachers than to me. Mathematics is a demanding field, and the encouragement this prize provides, and that Golden Key provides, will continue to motivate me towards my potential. I plan to put the prize money towards attending the 2009 GK International Conference in Orlando." |

Elizabeth comments, "I am very excited and honored that the Golden Key has recognized my dedication in my math classes by awarding me this scholarship. I want to thank this organization as well as Professors Grossman and Kruk at Oakland University. This scholarship means a lot to me because it shows that I am effectively able to teach math. I just finished my fourth year at Oakland University in the School of Education and Human Services with a double major in math and Spanish. The essay that I submitted for this scholarship outlines the history of the abacus and then teaches a reader how to use an abacus to perform mathematical computations. It took a lot of effort because it was on a topic in which I had no previous knowledge. By winning this scholarship, it verifies that I am able to teach myself a new mathematical concept and then effectively teach it to others, which is an important trait for an elementary school teacher. I will put this scholarship money towards my math methods course in the fall to advance my techniques for teaching math." |
