| Johnathon comments, "I founded and led Step Safe, an entirely youth-run body designed to assist landmine victims across the world and spread awareness of landmines amongst young Australians. We raised around $40 000, educated around 3 000 young Australians about landmines, lobbied the Australian Government to renew its pledge of $100 million towards the landmine cause and involved ourselves in any other way possible to contribute to the campaign to create a world free of landmines."
"The main challenge has been to continually remind my committee members of the difference they are making in the world. Because the recipients of our work live in Cambodia and so we don't get to see landmine survivors making use of the funds we raise, it is sometimes difficult to keep working hard. To overcome this issue, I have had to constantly be enthusiastic and optimistic about our cause. What keeps me going is the knowledge that we are helping people. Even if there are times when we are not raising as much money as we would like, I know that anything we can produce helps those in need." |
